Flushing Mistakes That Could Cost You: A Guide to Toilet No-Nos

Dec 23, 2024 | Educational

There are some items that you should never attempt to flush down the toilet. To help ensure your pipes remain clog-free, here’s some helpful advice from Noble BC about keeping your plumbing system running efficiently.

Flushing Wipes Labeled “Flushable”
Despite their label advising that flushing “flushable” wipes is okay, you should never do so. They do not always completely break down, which may lead to potential clogs that may leave you rushing to the plumbing supply store or calling your local plumber. Always dispose of wipes in the trash and advise anyone else using your restroom to do the same.

Using Too Much Toilet Paper
Toilet paper is designed to begin breaking down once you flush it. However, if you use too much, it may not dissolve quickly enough, leading to recurrent clogs and waste getting stuck in the sewer line. The preferred amount of toilet paper to use per flush is up to ten squares at a time, and frequently flush as you go to prevent clogs.

Flushing Non-Biodegradable Items
Some people mistakenly believe that non-biodegradable items like paper towels and cotton balls can break down when flushed in the toilet. Unfortunately, a lack of awareness may lead to clogged pipes and damage to your local wastewater treatment plant due to non-disintegrated items entering the facility.

Pouring Grease or Oil Down the Toilet
Pouring grease or oil down the toilet is a surefire way to grant you an emergency trip to Vancouver for plumbing supplies. While grease is a liquid when hot, it solidifies as it cools. It also doesn’t mix with water and will cause blockages by sticking to the insides of your plumbing pipes, leading to very expensive repairs. The best way to dispose of grease and oil is to throw it in the trashcan after cooling down.

Ignoring a Running Toilet
It’s common for people to disregard a running toilet as a minor inconvenience to get to later. However, a running toilet can waste water while significantly impacting your utility bill. If your toilet keeps running and you’re unsure why, call a plumber or visit your local plumbing supply store, where they can provide you with some guidance and advice on how to solve the issue.
